HELENA — Police are investigating a shooting and stabbing that occurred Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, at the Gold Bar in downtown Helena.
Officers responded to the 400 block of North Last Chance Gulch around 1:40 a.m. on a report of a stabbing and shooting.
Gold Bar owner Sarah Hamblock shared the following information with MTN News:
“Near closing time on December 28, 2023, an altercation broke out between two groups of patrons. Bar staff followed standard procedure to separate the groups, leading one group outside and We encouraged the group to remain inside. Unfortunately, the customers continued to argue outside. At this point, staff called the police. Western and Gold Bar crews are deeply disappointed by these events. We’ve worked hard to make our bars a safe place for everyone and contribute to our communities.”
Police said four people were injured and taken to a medical facility. The nature and severity of the injuries were not disclosed.
Lt. Randy Ranalli of the Helena Police Department said this was an unusual incident and it is unusual for Helena police to respond to a situation where so many people were injured at one time.
“It started indoors and moved outside, so it was a very extensive scene, so for the detectives there was a lot going on and a lot of evidence. They cleared out of there around nightfall. However, further investigation is still underway to attempt to interview witnesses and other parties involved,” Ranali said.
He added: “Detectives are working steadily and are following up on information received. There have been injuries and we are waiting to speak to those involved, but there are others we have not yet been able to contact. We are all working together to help each other obtain as much information as possible to move the investigation forward.”
If you were at the scene before officers arrived or have information that could help the investigation, call dispatch at 406-457-8866 and ask to speak with a Helena Police Department supervisor. please.
