new york — A driver trying to flee police on a midtown Manhattan sidewalk struck and injured eight people Sunday night.
Cellphone video shows the out-of-control Mercedes attempting to flee from NYPD officers, who eventually surrounded the vehicle near West 34th Street and Ninth Avenue.
The driver crashed into Boris Torres’ Peruvian restaurant.
“You could see on the video that all the officers started breaking the windows of the car and trying to stop the man and get him out of the car,” Torres said.
The pursuit began around 1:30 a.m. Monday, when police responded to an altercation at the corner of 33rd and 7th Streets.
According to police, the 44-year-old man fled as officers approached. He reportedly hit many cars and people while driving the wrong way on 34th Street, eventually hitting the sidewalk.
The injured included a police officer and a 39-year-old woman who was crushed under the food truck.
“It’s crazy. This is not the first time something has happened here in the new year. It happened probably about three years ago. It wasn’t a car, but someone robbed multiple stores,” Torres said. said. He was seriously injured in Monday’s accident.
Torres said a thief stole his cash register on a past New Year’s Day. This time, his restaurant’s awning was destroyed and he doesn’t know when the Department of Buildings will be able to reopen the restaurant.
“I don’t know if it’s going to be my insurance or my car’s insurance. I have to go to the station to get a report,” he said.
The driver was arrested and taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition. Charges were pending.
