Emergency workers rescue two people from canal after helicopter crash in South Florida, one of whom later died
MIAMI – South Florida emergency workers on Wednesday rescued two people from a canal after a helicopter crash, including one who later died.
Aerial video footage showed divers with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue searching the canal. Two people were taken to a local hospital in Miami, where one was in critical condition and the other with non-life-threatening injuries, CBS News Miami reported.
“Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries. The woman is expected to survive,” Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta told WSVN-TV.
Authorities did not identify the victims or say how they met. The NTSB plans to identify the pilot of the plane.
Investigators said witnesses described seeing what appeared to be a helicopter spinning and falling, Zabaleta said.
“It was flying very low. That’s when I first realized something was happening,” said local resident Vivian Alvarez.
The Federal Aviation Administration announced it was opening an investigation, and the Miami-Dade Police Department Homicide Unit is investigating the deaths.
