With the addition of the new grinder, the company’s ZERO Technology cutting tool, which allows food manufacturers to easily crush mono-material multipacks into individual cups, can now be sharpened on-site in Massachusetts.
Leominster, Massachusetts – IMA Dairy & Food USA – Its equipment solutions include the well-established brands Gusti, Hamba, Hassia, Fillshape, Corazza, Elka, Alfamac and Intecma – Installed sophisticated grinders to accelerate the grinding process of cutting tools Did. zero technology, a feature that helps food brands adopt sustainable mono-material cup packaging. The zero technology process, highlighted by an easily removable central cutting unit (CCU), already minimizes production downtime for replacement, reduces the cost of spare parts and eliminates the use of multiple punches between sharpenings. It is a feature. The grinding technology, which allows individual blades to be sharpened on-site, further reduces downtime for food brands seeking solutions to incorporate sustainable cup packaging materials.
IMA’s patented ZERO technology can cut up to 24 cups simultaneously for high-quality cutting and pre-cutting of environmentally friendly materials such as PET, PP and PLA. This allows multipacks to be easily split into individual units. This is a notoriously cumbersome process that limits the use of single-material packaging materials.
A newly integrated on-site grinder makes punch resharpening quick and easy. The grinder’s wheel head has a very rigid construction and the motor assembly is mounted in a heavy cast casing. This setup has two advantages: balancing the mass and packing the backside of the guideway to limit adjustment and avoid bending. An additional vertical spindle can be optionally mounted on the grinding wheel head for specific grinding tasks. The cartridge wheel and spindle arrangement features three pairs of precision angular contact bearings mounted on a nitride-hardened spindle to provide the rigid support necessary for high metal polishing accuracy.
While grinders can be equipped or retrofitted onto most bag packaging machines, the IMA family of companies’ FFS equipment seamlessly incorporates Zero technology with advanced grinding capabilities.
Using an exchangeable cutting element setup that allows for proper exchange of individual tool components in the field, line downtime can be reduced from 3 to 6 hours of tedious labor required to change an entire cutting tool to 20 minutes. This simple “building block” approach also internalizes the maintenance process, keeping the various components of the tool in-house for ongoing maintenance rather than shipping the entire cutting tool to an external entity.
The cost of ownership is also significantly reduced. This is because replacing a CCU partially internally is much cheaper than replacing the entire cutting tool externally. In addition, IMA’s Zero Technology cutting tools are more robust than traditional tools, producing more than 7 million punches between sharpenings. This is twice as much as traditional cutting tools, and even three times as much.
ZERO Technology uses a separate sleeve that allows the cup design to be changed without having to manufacture a completely new thermoforming mold. The result is a material-agnostic attitude by design that helps food brands take important next steps in sustainability.
In particular, attaching a PET lid and label to the molded cup creates a fully recyclable package, providing great sustainability. Additionally, the use of transparent monomaterials makes the product visible to consumers and improves its aesthetics when displayed in stores.
