When I was feeling down on a Saturday afternoon due to the wars in the Middle East, I thought I’d pick myself up a little by going to a place that’s been in Chicago and admired much longer than I’ve been here. Dine on Ricobene’s breaded steak sandwich, the “best sandwich in the world.”I’ve known that for at least 20 years, but somehow I’m not sorry Tuchas That side. I finally decided to do it.
From the article “Chicago has the best sandwich in the world, but most people don’t know it” by Ted Berg.
The following paragraphs of this post contain bold and speculative claims about sandwiches, but I want you to understand that they are not unresearched. I worked at a deli making sandwiches for three years. At my previous job, I regularly wrote sandwich reviews. I have traveled with her to 42 states and he to 20 countries and have eaten sandwiches in most of them. I know sandwiches, I promise.
And the breaded steak sandwich at Rico Venez in Chicago is the best sandwich in the world. Please mark it.
When ordered with mozzarella cheese and hot giardiniera (these are important), the sandwich presents a combination of flavors and textures better than any of the thousands of other sandwiches I’ve sampled in 34 years .
The main ingredient, the eponymous breaded steak, is exactly what it sounds like. But even by the high standards we expect from fried steak, it’s amazing. It’s piping hot and amazingly soft, with perfectly seasoned delicious breadcrumbs, and somehow manages to stay crunchy even when slathered with a sweet tomato sauce that complements it perfectly.
The cheese adds a salty taste and a gooey texture, and serves to bind together a very messy combination of ingredients (albeit somewhat poorly). The giardiniera (pickled vegetable flavor) adds crunch and a vinegary spiciness that seems to amplify all the other delicious flavors in the sandwich. And the soft, fresh hero roll manages to live up to the challenge of fitting this very sloppy sandwich into it without being too bulky.
It’s the perfect sandwich. So, I’m conscious of the haunting fact that a sandwich as good as this one could exist somewhere, somewhere I’ve never been and may never be. , I don’t want to believe that there is a sandwich that tastes better than this one. One. That’s why I feel comfortable calling this the best sandwich.
How could I read something like that when I live a 25 minute drive from Rico Bene’s and don’t eat sandwiches? After going there on Saturday, I mourned the lost years of Chicago without sandwiches. I did.
It’s an unassuming looking place in Bridgeport, mostly below the El River. You must know about the inner glory. Luckily there is a large free parking lot across the street.
But the inside is full of feeders, mostly eating steak sandwiches (I took takeout, and that deprived me of the opportunity to buy the essential fries):
The item arrives within minutes and is carefully wrapped in two layers of aluminum foil and paper. I need this because it’s a messed up sandwich.
And its contents. Two large breaded steaks (not one!) served with mozzarella and sauce, and of course the steaks are breaded. Next time I had the regular grilled peppers and onions instead of the hot giardiniera. And the next time is coming soon.
This, a “regular” (also available as a “large” for $15), is a fairly large meal, with two large chunks of beef giving the sandwich some weight. And its flavor is unparalleled. Somehow, all the different things (see video below) come together to create a fantastic food. After I finished eating, I thought, “Maybe I should have ordered a larger portion.” But I wouldn’t have been able to finish it.
Is this the best sandwich in the world? I don’t know because I have never eaten sandwiches from around the world. I also haven’t had all the sandwiches that are heavily advertised in America, such as Iowa’s famous pound pork sandwich or the Southern barbecue sandwich (I think barbecue is best served on a plate rather than a sammy) ). And counting a hamburger as a sandwich complicates matters.
I can I would say this is one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in America, and the best I’ve had in Chicago. If you’re here, buy one.
There is a video about this.
