Officials said 122 people were rescued after a large chunk of ice broke off the shore at Upper Red Lake Friday evening.
A large group of fishermen became stranded after the ice they were on broke away from the main shoreline, according to the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the statement, emergency personnel were called to the scene around 4:57 p.m.
Before first responders arrived on the scene, a group of bystanders attempted to evacuate the stranded fishermen using canoes. The attempt ended with four people falling into the water, the sheriff’s office said. The four were taken back to the drift ice and warmed up in a fishing hut.
These four witnesses were the only people who fell into the water during the incident.
The evacuation was by boat and airboat, according to a sheriff’s office spokesperson. By 7:37 p.m., all stranded fishermen were confirmed to have returned to the shoreline.
Upper Red Lake has been the site of several ice rescues this winter, including a mass rescue of 35 anglers on Dec. 17, a nearly destroyed plane landing on Dec. 19, and a near-destructive plane landing on Dec. This includes rescuing three men after a collision with an ATV on the 21st. The trailer broke through the ice. On Thursday morning, the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office received another report from Upper Red Lake of a father and son who fell off the ice on an ATV.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued multiple warnings of poor ice conditions across the state, saying that the recent combination of wind, rain, and warm weather has “decreased the required ice thickness across the state.” This means that in some areas, there are few, if any, cases,” he told the public. For ice fishing.
Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs warned in a news release last week: “Please use extreme caution if you are near the lake and check ice thickness frequently.”
