OPINION: This is a list of things I want white people to refrain from doing for the next 365 days.

Happy New Year to all you white people who will find every reason to be angry at your friends, non-friends, and the same group that stole everything from you.
I’m sure everyone is about to break a promise they made to themselves on Sunday night. I know it is. As I type this, I’m sitting here eating fast food hash browns and a fast food breakfast sandwich. I definitely bought coffee this morning instead of making it at home.
This is why I don’t make resolutions. It’s so easy to break down within the first few hours of the new year. I ended up taking all these shortcuts because I woke up “late” this morning. That’s definitely an excuse, not an explanation, but I will try to do better 365 days from now. He was blessed with an extra day in 2024, so let’s consider today, January 2nd, as a “new year’s fresh start.”
You can start working on your solution now.
Speaking of determination…
As 2023 draws to a close, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I need to change in the new year.
Some of them are personal to me: exercise more, eat better, have a more consistent sleep and work schedule (this writer’s life is full of crazy hours), every night. I’ll be cooking more at home instead of doing GrubHub.
But the other thing I thought about is the things that happen on a daily basis in black people’s lives, things that (some) white people do, that are endlessly worse.
My wish list of things white people should stop doing in 2024
What does the loneliness crisis mean for Black women? It’s time to address the isolating effects of incarceration.
gina clayton johnson
‘Raising Kenan’ Season 3, Episode 5: Ronnie Isn’t His Brother’s Keeper
It is an American tradition that white men are spared from riots.
Nikki Haley explains why she left the Civil War blank
The McBride sisters are master winemakers and participate in the “Masters of the Game”
Kanye’s apology to Jews is pathetic
In fact, the NFL player is just as much “prey” as Simone Biles’ husband
I’ve come up with a list and am going to share it here in hopes that white people to whom these things apply will take note, take stock, and show personal responsibility (without endless arrogance and entitlement). (as opposed to white privilege) and make positive changes that have a direct and positive impact on the daily lives of Black people in America.
Enough with “It’s not all white people.”
When white people say “black” or “nigger” or any other collective noun or phrase they want to use to lump us all together, you’ll never hear a black person repeatedly shout, “We’re not all black!” there is no.
That said, this is not our first rodeo, and we have seen enough of them to know and understand that black people are not monolithic and that one person or small group of black people does not represent the rest of us. Because you’re walking around a few blocks. We identify when something doesn’t apply to us and move on from there.
Why can’t all white people do that?
Some white people get so offended by the phrase “white people” that they completely derail the conversation. Because they want to firmly establish that, in any scenario, they are not the white people we are referring to. They need implicit and verbal validation that they are not that white before they can understand the story we are trying to tell.
Please stop this.
Be mature enough to understand that if it doesn’t apply, it’s okay to leave it alone. Just as we don’t know “all black people,” we also know “not all white people.”
We don’t always remind you that we are not all the same, so why do you feel the need to do so?
I could elaborate on how (some of you)’s insecurities about this matter are rooted in the fact that deep down you fear that you are, in fact, one of those white people.
Unpack it and leave us alone.
Come up with your own social content.
I’m addicted to TikTok. Of all the social media platforms available to us, TikTok is the one I spend the most time scrolling through.
Black people on TikTok are hilarious and genius and creative, and (some) white people on TikTok have built an entire platform just by imitating and copying everything black people do. It’s so awful and annoying that I wish it would stop.
It’s as if the content didn’t exist if it wasn’t for black people.
If you weren’t filming videos of yourself doing our dances, using our soundbites, telling our jokes, and trying to be us in every way imaginable. What are you photographing yourself?
Are (some) white people’s regular, non-routine lives so boring that their only option is to live virtually through us?
Get new material. please. please.
I probably wouldn’t find it so offensive if it weren’t for the fact that black creators are pushed down by the algorithm in favor of white creators who basically stick to their own style.
It’s getting worse.
Please think about your own content and do your best. You can do that, right? i believe in you!
Stop policing black people and mind your own business.
Wherever there are black people, there will always be white people nearby who care about the work of black people.
Stop thinking it’s your job to police black people’s presence and actions that don’t bother you.
You can’t do regular things like take a walk around your neighborhood. Deliver Amazon packages as specified in the job description. I sit in my car and listen to music. Or other mundane things that white people can think about without asking themselves who we are, what we do, and why we do it.
It’s like (some) white people think they are.
Supervisor People watching black people on the street.
Please leave us alone. If we’re not harming you, why are you worried about what we’re doing? Is there a crime being committed or are they just being nosey?
Why do you think what black people are doing is irrelevant to your job?
Find something you can do safely and leave black people alone.
Stop using the police as a point of contact for black people to complain.
Let’s be real. Police already routinely kill black people with little provocation, so you can’t deny that a black neighbor who went outside to water her grass at 2 a.m. is putting her neighbor in unnecessary danger. I called the police because I didn’t like the exposure.
The police are not your personal concierge. You shouldn’t call the police just because a black person “disobeyed” your orders. At best it’s inappropriate and at worst he should be charged with attempted murder. Seeing black people being “punished”, I have to ask, what about people like you?
Black people don’t have to do what you say or what you want them to do. Not calling the police because you don’t get your way with a black person should be considered a hate crime.
White people who do this should be charged with hate crimes. They use the police as a weapon against black people, knowing full well what can happen when police are used against black people, no matter the circumstances.
In summary, (some) white people really need to do better in 2024, and I sincerely hope you all at least try.
