WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Working out will look different at Odyssey Fitness in Wilkes-Barre.
Assistant General Manager Ryan Sabka said the dance floor is one of many facilities in the fitness center and will be full throughout January.
“There’s a lot of new faces in the gym. We’ll have a lot of familiar faces back as well,” he said.
Everyone is working hard to achieve their New Year’s resolutions.
But all Odyssey trainers want their members to know that there are many different ways to get fit.
Zumba instructor Alyssa Thomas says she tries to make her clients feel like they’re not working out at all.
“Just standing there for an hour and shaking something keeps you training, but it’s fun,” she said.
Alyssa spent almost every day of her childhood in a dance studio, but when she graduated from the studio, she wanted to find a way to stay in shape without the need for a treadmill.
“We get all kinds of people, from people who have never danced in their life to people who have been dancing for 20 years,” Thomas explained.
However, being a Zumba instructor is just a part-time job for her.
“I also work in the health field as a full-time job during the day, and I always tell my patients that when it comes to lifestyle, health is an important part of it,” she added.
Alyssa and the staff at Odyssey don’t just want to lead the exercise, they want to create a training environment that doesn’t intimidate members and makes them want to return to the gym year-round.
“We’re over 70,000 square feet, so other gyms overlap with each other so people can see what you’re doing in other gyms,” said Ryan Sabka, assistant general manager at Odyssey. I can do it,” he said.
We provide resources to help Odyssey members stick to their New Year’s resolutions. Transform into your healthiest version of yourself.
That’s Alyssa’s favorite part of her job.
“We have people here who were very shy on the first day and had no idea what was going to happen. And then a few weeks later they come and they’re having fun and they’re healthier and they’re really into it.” she said.
