INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Two people were taken into custody by IMPD after a large group of protesters blocked Lafayette Street Saturday night.
Shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to the event center in the 1700 block of Lafayette Road after receiving reports of a large gathering of protesters. It is a residential and commercial area on the west side of the city. Witnesses told News 8 it was organized by a group protesting the dictatorship in the East African country of Eritrea.
At one point during the event, another group supporting the Eritrean government came to protest the event. The large group eventually entered the roadway and began blocking traffic.
Investigators say a vehicle pulled into the vicinity of the gathering and people began jumping into the vehicle.
IMPD cordoned off the area between 16th Street and Cold Spring Road for approximately two hours in response to the disturbance. Shortly after 7 p.m., protesters began clearing the road and police reopened it to traffic.
