Panaji: Around 190 mobile phones were reported stolen from both visitors and locals in Calangute and Anjuna, where thousands of visitors were recorded from the Christmas weekend to New Year’s Eve.
With nearly 200 complaints registered, the North District Police arrested four groups of 37 mobile phone thieves and recovered around 90 stolen mobile phones worth around Rs 7 million within a week.

Addressing a press conference at the police headquarters on Monday, North Goa Superintendent of Police Nidhin Varsan said that last weekend, Calangute police and tourist police jointly cracked down on three gangs from West Bengal, Maharashtra and Rajasthan-Delhi. Stated.
As a result of the operation, 20 suspected thieves were arrested and 60 mobile phones worth around Rs 45-50 million were recovered.
“These gangs have come to Goa with the sole purpose of targeting visitors in crowded areas during the Christmas season. Anjuna police arrest another mobile theft gang
On December 30, 2023, Anjuna police busted another gang in Maharashtra, arrested seven people and seized 29 high-end mobile phones worth a total of Rs 2.5 million.
“This is a planned action by a gang. The majority were tourists who lost their mobile phones in these robberies,” the SP said. Between Christmas and New Year, district police arrested a total of 37 mobile phone thieves and recovered 90 mobile phones, Varsan said.
Numerous parties and events in the coastal zone saw a significant increase in visitor numbers during the last week of December 2023. While Calangute police received 100 complaints of mobile phone theft, Anjuna police received 90 such complaints.
