A college student who applied for about 500 internships surprised TikTok users by showing off the results of his hard work.
I don’t mean to sound too negative, but honestly, trying to get a job in your chosen field can seem almost impossible these days.
Even entry-level positions somehow require a large amount of experience, but you can’t get experience without experience. This is a high viscosity cycle.
Oliver Wu, a computer science major at the University of Michigan, applied to not one, not two, but 456 internships to pursue a career in the technology industry, and he experienced first-hand the struggles of entering the workforce. did.
In a video shared on TikTok, Wu explains how to create a spreadsheet to track application status and success, with columns to record interview stages, Google search links, and focus group referrals. I shared how I put my skills to use.
Although she is still in her third year of university, Wu was eager to gain experience and started applying for internships in July, before starting university.
Wu soon reached 200 applications, but soon stopped keeping track of them, but got used to a daily routine.
Wu told Newsweek magazine: “Typically, I open two or three job sites to see what new jobs are posted, and if the salary, location, role, etc. match what I’m looking for, I will apply for all job openings.” ”
“I also kept track of which companies I was referred to and checked weekly to see if they were accepting applications.”
Even when she wasn’t spending time applying, Wu was practicing her technical interview skills.
So it looks like he was doing everything humanly possible to advance his career, which is why people were so shocked by this outcome.
In his TikTok video, Wu said that out of 456 applications, 56 interviews, 30 technical evaluations, and 22 second and third round evaluations, he received only one offer. revealed.
“The hardest part was staying positive and working hard despite hundreds of rejections,” he told Newsweek.
Viewers were shocked by the revelation, with one person reacting to his spreadsheet video, saying: “Seeing this makes me even more desperate because I don’t even have the energy to do that.” Ta.
Another person commented: “The struggle is real. Finding a job is also hard.”
Although the number of rejections Wu received was disappointing, the student ultimately accepted an offer at Ford as an enterprise technology intern, which she said on TikTok was “worth it.”
As soon as she joined the internship, Wu said she felt like a “weight had been lifted off my shoulders.”
“I was in class at the time, and I remember walking outside into the hallway and jumping up and down, silently screaming in excitement for about 10 minutes,” he said.
Following his initial offer from Ford, Wu eventually received two more offers from other companies, but ultimately stuck with Ford.
After a very long process, Mr. Wu shared his top three tips for anyone involved in the application process.
The first is networking. Reach out to people on LinkedIn and at career fairs. 2 – Interview practice. And third, be patient.
